Why some businesses succeed while others struggle (Part 2)

Is your business not quite as successful as you’d like it to be?

If so, I’d like you to take a few minutes to really think about how you would like your business to be – make notes if you want.  Think about how much money you would like to be making and who your ideal clients would be. It is also worth considering the impact it would have on you, your friends and family; would you be happy getting up in the morning to go to work? And would you feel passionate about what you are doing?

Great, so now you know how you would like your business to be let’s take an honest look at where you are now.

  • How many clients do you have at present and how does this compare with the number you’d really like to have?
  • Do these clients really match with what you have identified as your niche market?
  • What was your income and expenditure for the previous year?
  • What is your current marketing strategy? And what results is it producing?

Now compare these answers with your initial thoughts on where you want your business to be.

This comparison between where your business is now and where you want it to be is the first step towards your success and is the key step that most businesses fail to take.  Only by making this comparison and identifying where there are gaps, can you begin to see what you need to do to start making your business a success.  I can’t stress enough how important it is to do this.

Once you know where the gaps are you are well on the way. Now you need to think about what is stopping you from taking action to narrow those gaps.  Is it lack of knowledge, time or money? Or is something else holding you back?

There is so much information and help available on the internet that you can easily access.  Make use of LinkedIn to ask questions in areas where you think you are lacking in knowledge and/or join your local business networking group as this is a great way to meet more people (including links to potential clients) as well as for exchanging information.  For more information on networking see 7 Ways to Negotiate Effectively

But most importantly, do the comparison detailed above as I can guarantee that the way to your business success will become much clearer as a result.
