The downturn in the economy has resulted in an increase in the number of people starting their own business and it is predicted that this increase will continue well into this year as people try to take more control of their career.
So why do people decide to be their own boss:
- They have been made redundant;
- It is a lifestyle choice;
- To exploit a gap in the market;
- To follow a dream;
- Take control over how they spend their time;
- To be more in control over what they earn.
But forget all the business issues that relate to starting up a business for a moment and take time to think about yourself – your personality and your resilience.
It’s one thing to hate your current job; it’s boring, you hate your boss, you feel unappreciated and underpaid but how good will you be at working for yourself? Can you stay focussed and keep working towards your goals no matter what gets in the way? Have you even set goals for yourself and your business? Will you be good at managing your time or will you be too easily sidetracked? Will you be able to bounce back when things don’t go the way you hoped? Are you self disciplined enough to manage your time effectively? Do you have good communication skills so that you can get customers? Are you an introvert or an extrovert and does this fit with your business? Are you confident enough to sell yourself and network with new people?
No matter how good your Business Plan, you won’t be a success if you don’t know your own capabilities and personal style.
Use your answers to the above questions to help you answer this key question:
Why do you want to run your own business?
